Contest 2011
Welcome to the Launceston Town Band Solo & Quartet contest 2011!
Our Solo & Quartet Contest is now in it’s 6th year and for the first time we are delighted that Tony Evans of Bravura Trombones has agreed to bring a Trade Stand to the Contest. This will bring another dynamic to the whole day event so if you're looking to upgrade or just browse then do remember to take a look at what Tony has to offer.
We would like to thank all those who have helped to make the Contest a success during it’s early years and we look forward to welcoming Entries from players near and far for this year’s event.
The Contest takes place on Saturday 15th October and is held at Central Methodist Church, Launceston. The contest adjudicator for this year is Mr Adrian Harvey. There are a wide variety of classes including a percussion class. Entry forms are available from this site or by contacting Sue Pitt on 01288 354993 or just email us.
Closing date for entries is Saturday 8th October 2011. We look forward to seeing you there!
Adrian Harvey was born in St. Austell, Cornwall, and was taught to play the cornet by E. J. Williams when he joined the St. Dennis Band. With St. Dennis he enjoyed many contest successes with both the Youth and Senior Bands, whilst steadily progressing through the ranks.
In the mid 1980s he joined the up and coming Bodmin Town Band, under the direction of Leonard Adams. There he was to enjoy banding at a top class level with many of our leading conductors, such as Peter Parkes, Richard Evans and Nicholas Childs.
When Adrian moved to East Devon in late 1996, he found the time spent travelling to practices too great, so he left the Bodmin Town Band and joined the Stoke Sub Hamdon Band, where he remained for just over a season. It was there that a chance conversation started his conducting career. The Ottery St Mary Band’s conductor had retired due to ill health, and after an audition, Adrian was offered the post immediately.
In 1998, Adrian was appointed to his present post as Musical Director of the Sidmouth Town Band. At the time the band was at a low ebb, but since then Adrian’s encouragement, hard work, and dedication have been the driving force behind the band’s continuous improvement, recent successes, and promotion to the third section. Adrian’s commitment to ensuring beginners are given the opportunity to learn a brass instrument has resulted in many players progressing through the ranks, and he now works hard with Bandmaster and Principal Cornet Fiona Bell to provide tuition and advice to learners of all ages. Thanks to Adrian, the band’s fortunes have been turned around and its future looks much brighter.
